Mechanical Workshop
The shared mechanical workshop of the 2nd Institute of Physics offers essential support through longtime experience and further training. We design and fabricate mechanical components and apparatus for scientific research. The emphasis of the work is the manufacturing and the assembling of experimental systems which are working under extreme conditions, like ultra-high vacuum or very low temperatures (mK range). With the newly introduced CAD-CAM system it is possible to transfer 3D drawings of workpieces directly to the machining centers. Thus, complex structures, e.g. curved surfaces are possible to manufacture.

Examples of our workpieces

Sample garage for 15 sample holders. Special feature: The sample holders are mounted on a sphere aligned to the center of a wobble stick.
material: stainless steel/copper beryllium
manufacturing technique: CNC 5-axis machining centre, WIG-welding (flange attachment)
The cutout of the holes for the flanges is done by the CNC machining centre and an especially designed chamber support, which allows a precise adjustment of postion and angle. After that the standard CF flanges are welded to the body of the chamber.
material: stainless steel tube
manufacturing technique: CNC machining centre, WIG-welding (flanges)

Completely manufactured UHV-system consisting of 3 stainless steel chambers with a diameter of 300mm, 250mm and 150mm.
The frame will support an UHV cryostat and two preparation chambers with a weight of about 2.5 tons. Due to vibration damping the whole frame will rest on four air damping feet.
material: stainless steel
manufacturing technique: WIG-welding
